Part Time Teacher/Naturalist
Job Title: Part-time Teacher/Naturalist, Program Department
Lichterman Nature Center
Pay: $13.64 /hour
Hours: Variable: Typically 10 – 20 hours/week to cover 5 day/week operation (Tuesday – Saturday). Heaviest work loads in Spring & Fall. Some evening work may be required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Presents programs on Natural Science, the Environment and Conservation to public and school audiences of all ages, both on and off site
• Assists in the development and implementation of all phases of all Lichterman Nature Center programs, activities and initiatives
• Assists in exhibit development and upkeep
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
• Assists in the care and feeding of live animals and plants
• Assists in customer service, special events, administrative and clerical activities
• Performs any other functions which may be assigned
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS - Requires excellent oral and written communication skills. Requires the ability to operate office equipment such as personal computer. Requires sufficient mobility to perform duties at LNC such as walking trails; reaching, climbing, bending, and stooping to field collect natural history specimens or give outdoor interpretive programs; and working outdoors in hot, cold, wet, and dry environments. Requires standing and walking for extended periods. Requires the ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS - Majority of work is performed outdoors in various locations around LNC and some work is performed in an office environment. Some off-site work may be required including outdoor field collecting and observing. Requires willingness and ability to work with and around live animals.
HAZARDS - Limited exposure to hazard of accident while walking trails, collecting field specimens, or handling native wildlife, such as mammals, reptiles (e.g., snakes), insects, arachnids and amphibians. Exposure to inclement weather, hot or cold, dry or rainy, and irritant plants (e.g., poison ivy).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS –
• Must be a resident of the City of Memphis at the time of application.
• College degree in science, education or recreation or related field or any combination of experience or training
• Strong content knowledge of Life Science, Environmental Science and/or Native Wildlife with focus on subject areas related to LNC’s exhibits, programs, scope and purpose
• Knowledge of basic computer software
• Valid TN driver’s license
