Freedom Soundscapes: The Music of the Underground Railroad

June 19, 2021 | 1:00 PM - 1:45 PM
Ekpe 1

Come along with Ekpe and Company on this musical journey as they present Freedom Soundscapes: The Music of the Underground Railroad. Enslaved Africans ingeniously used their music and oral tradition to escape from slavery to freedom. This entertaining and enlightening program involves the audience in seeing how spirituals and folk songs had secret code messages. All ages will be thrilled to experience the sounds of authentic traditional African drums and musical instruments and how they were used as a form of communication to help the runaways escape from the plantation.

Freedom Soundscapes: The Music of the Underground Railroad explores the rich legacy of how people of African descent in the diaspora created new music and art forms that have spread all around the world. This interactive performance is a “musical museum” and a history lesson within itself.

Free with admission.
